Topic | Pediatric Epilepsy and Sleep
Speaker | Dr. Anjalee W. Galion, CHOC Children's Specialists - Neurology
Sleep problems are among the most critical problems facing people with epilepsy. You may be unaware of the seizures that occur during your or your child's sleep. People with epilepsy have been shown to suffer a significantly higher rate of sleep disturbance which can be associated with greater social and attention problems. Because lack of sleep is a trigger for seizures, achieving healthy sleep on a regular basis is essential for improving the quality of life.
Learn about the importance of and how to get to healthy sleep. Dr. Galion, who has studied the relationship between sleep and epilepsy, will discuss the common sleep issues and cover related topics such as melatonin and medications that can affect sleep.

The most important diagnostic test for epilepsy is the electroencephalogram (EEG). This painless procedure is the most useful test in confirming a diagnosis of epilepsy and discerning what seizure type or types are occuring. It provides a patient's epileptologist or neurologist a record of activity occuring in the brain. Dr. Zupanc will explain how this valuable information helps her diagnose seizure types and syndromes. She will also explain how other neuro diagnostic tests, MRI, PET and MEG are combined with the EEG, and used to determine a diagnosis.

Valentines is a fun month with the cherub cupids flying around. Dr. Leath will work in self esteem issues and the teens will be so smitten, they won't know it. The goals of Feb is to identify 2-3 areas in which a teen is unsatisfied or unhappy with and figure out a way to reframe in a positive way as a means to boast self-esteem. The teens will help each other to identify positives about the issue or come up with positives about the person.
Here is an example
Complaint: I'm short.
Positive: You still might grow taller (if male) or You're not short, you're petite (if female). We can help each other focus less on issues which they cannot control (such as height) and learn to focus more on areas they can.

Classifying seizure disorders and syndromes is the most important step in an accurately diagnosing and then determining the most appropriate treatment.
Classification is based on an accumulation of facts determined thorugh; EEG, neuroimaging, age of seizure onset, seizure type(s), medical history and evaluation. Many individuals with epilepsy and parents of children with epilepsy question their epilepsy diagnosis. The more we understand this process the better we can assess whether our child or loved one has received an accurate diagnosis. Join us and learn how seizure classification is conducted by an experienced epileptologist.

Topic | How to Understand, Build and Maintain
an Effective IEP for your Child
Speaker | Danielle Augustin, Esq.
Augustin Egelsee L.L.P.
Many children with epilepsy have Individual Education Programs (IEP) due to their unique and individual learning differences. Learning is a child's number one job guiding them to the goal of maximum independence in adulthood. Epilepsy, uncontrolled seizures and anti-convulsant medication can complicate and or impede learning for your student causing them to miss important learning milestones. Join us and learn how to build an appropriate IEP for your student. Once well-written and signed, an IEP must be implemented by the school district and is protected by Federal and State laws. A well written IEP will help provide for maximum learning potential for your child based on appropriate evaluations, well written goals and achievable benchmarks. As a parent, you are your child's first advocate and it is important to be well prepared and knowledgeable in the area of Special Education Laws prior to attending an IEP meeting. At the end of the presentation, our guest speaker will provide time for parents to ask questions regarding IEPs, FAPE, IDEA and 504 plans. Your child's education is a valuable investment and we are here to help you plan for their future which is NOW.
Biography | Our speaker, Special Education Attorney Danielle Augustin is an attorney who provides zealous advocacy to children and families throughout California. Ms. Augustin's legal practice focuses solely on the issues related to juveniles, specifically the areas of special education, expulsions and juvenile delinquency. speakers are Dr. Gregory Cascino of Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN,
and Dr. Gregory Holmes of Dartmouth Medical School.
This full-day symposium is designed for neurologists, neurology

recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment, providing insight and
strategy to enhance the quality of life and cognitive function for people
with epilepsy.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Physicians, nurses, allied healthcare providers, individuals with epilepsy, and family members who want
to expand and update their knowledge of current research, clinical diagnosis, management and emerging
treatments, as well as cognition and quality-of-life issues related to complicated epilepsy.
Dr. Tracy Salazar will be reporting on her trip to Baltimore, MD where she will have attended the American Epilepsy Society (AES) annual conference.
A report from AES 2011 – Epilepsy can be caused by many things including trauma, lack of oxygen, tumors, brain malformations, stroke, infections, nerve degeneration, and genetic defects, but in 70% of patients the cause is still unknown. There is a huge push to change this fact and identify the cause of every person's epilepsy. But we won't stop there. Once we've identified the cause, how are we going to prevent or fix it? This presentation will present highlights from AES 2011 on the progress we are making in finding the causes and cures for epilepsy.

ESNOC was a proud vendor at this event. Recognizing the dedication and hard work that goes with being a School Nurse we provided each nurse with a Seizure First Aid, Nurse's File Folder; so the epilepsy information is readily accessible. ESNOC will be providing this valuable resource for all nurse Seizure Recognition and First Aid presentations.
Contents include: Diastat training cd, pamphlet, administration instructions, Seizure First Aid instructions, list of seizure types and medications, and ESNOC flyers.
If you would like to schedule a presentation, email us or call us at 714) 916-0456.
Your donation goes directly toward supporting the ESNOC programs and services to the 32,000 people diagnosed with epilepsy in Orange County.
